Los Angeles, Calif. 5/18/2005 - Macrovision® Corporation (Nasdaq: MVSN), the world’s leading supplier of content and software value management solutions, today launched the ActiveReach™ Game Value Management Solution, an end-to-end solution that allows game publishers to protect games against piracy and automatically deliver enhancements at all stages of a game’s lifecycle. Now game publishers can better manage the distribution, protection, updates and promotion of games, whether online or in the physical world, during pre-release, commercial release and post release.
The ActiveReach Game Value Management Solution provides an integrated technology platform for managing a game throughout its lifecycle. With Macrovision’s game solution, game publishers can leverage their existing infrastructure and easily innovate new distribution and business models, protect their copyrighted content from piracy, continuously promote to gamers after purchase and seamlessly update and patch games after release – all while simplifying the underlying technology that delivers these services.
"Major game developers and publishers invest millions of dollars on the development and promotion of games, yet they lose significant revenue to piracy," said Steve Weinstein, executive vice president and general manager of Macrovision’s Entertainment Technologies Group. "Macrovision’s ActiveReach Game Solution is designed to ensure that game developers and publishers maximize a game’s value by extending the life of its revenue earning potential, while enabling direct communication with customers to enhance existing games and promote new games."
A survey conducted by Macrovision in February/March 2005 of approximately 9,000 game players found that 40% of PC gamers and 21% of console gamers play pirated games. The study also showed that 43% of these pirated game players download over 15 pirated titles a year per gamer. Most importantly, 73% of these gamers said they would have bought a game within one month if a free version had not been readily available. This could represent over $1 billion of unrealized potential revenue to the games industry in addition to the $3 billion worldwide annual piracy loss reported by the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) that is attributed primarily to physical media counterfeit piracy.
The Game Value Management Solution is comprised of four products: SafeDisc® Advanced Copy and Hack Protection, Hawkeye™ Peer-to-Peer Antipiracy and Content Promotion, FLEXnet™ Trialware and Product Activation and Update Service. The Game Value Management Solution is generally available immediately.
At E3, Macrovision is hosting sessions which introduce the unique concept of game lifecycle value management by developing an understanding of how hackers work, a method to beat them, a workflow process to improve ROI and a blueprint to actively promote and maintain games after release.
